Breaking Africa’s Power Crisis: GSO Microgrid Powers Zambian Hotel

GSO has successfully commissioned a solar-storage microgrid for the Protea Hotel in Ndola, Zambia. This project overcomes the unreliable local grid with a hybrid system that combines solar power, battery storage, grid electricity, and a diesel generator.

Previously, the hotel relied on a noisy diesel generator for up to 15 hours daily due to limited grid supply. The new GSO system integrates 550kW solar panels and 800kWh of storage. It prioritizes solar energy during the day, uses the stored power at night, and minimizes generator use to emergencies.

The results are significant: 24/7 stable power, a drastic reduction in generator runtime, and over 50% savings in energy costs. The hotel expects a full return on its investment within two years.

This project demonstrates a replicable solution for businesses across Africa seeking reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective power.
